ANDREW PIERCE REPORTS - FEBRUARY 10, 2002

Mr. Tim Farr
P.O. Box 449
Ferron, UT 84523

Dear Tim,

In response to your request of 26 January, I have conducted research on more of your New England colonial ancestral lines.

The best work on the Farwells remains The Farwell Family( 1929). Considerable research done in England by that time resulted in a hypothetical chart showing James Farwell as possible father of William, and Annys( )Farwell as possible mother of James. But as of 1929, these connections were only hypothetical and must be treated with caution. All relevant pages are enclosed.

Although two NEHGS Register articles(In 1968 and 1970)discussed the THEORY that Edward Winslow?s mother was Elizabeth Follott, a 2000 article in the same Journal by Kenneth Kirkpatrick again examines Winslow?s labyrinthic family connections and calls the Elizabeth Follott theory Into question(but It does add some possible other Winslow ancestral connections). The articles are somewhat Intricate and speak for themselves, so I will not attempt to anayze them here; you might wish to correspond with Mr.Kirkpatrick personally at NEHGS, 101 Newbury St., Boston MA 02116, for any additional ideas.

The best work on Arthur Warren remains 1911?s Some Descendants of Arthur Warren; but Anderson?s The Great Migration Begins notes, in a sketch of Clement Briggs, that Warren was Involved with Briggs? wife Joane in 1638. But I have found nothing new as to his origins and antecedents. Thomas Lechford's Note-Book mentions Arthur Warren?s land in 1640, and he was a court witness In 1641(Mass. Court of Assistants).

The Descendants of John Heywood(1992)gives a long list of source consulted in compiling that family, but concludes: (His)actual place of birth...is still a mystery.

We do know that he was born about 1634, when he stated his age as about 35 In 1669(Middlesex Co. court case, 518/1669)." So, It is apparent that Heywood was born ca.1634, not 1644; and there is no evidence that his father was a Thomas Heywood. His wife was not Sarah Simonds, but Rebecca Adkinson; and they were married by 1659 when her father Thomas Adkinson?s estate was administered. He was obviously not the same John Hayward who came to Boston from Stepney, England in 1634, age 22.

The Great Migration confirms Bennett Hodsoll as Edmond Freeman?s first wife, and cites several TAG articles, and references to Dawes-Gates. These are enclosed.

I have found no new information on John Fuller since the publication of Blake-

Glidden Ancestry In 1948. I did spot him selling land at Cambridge to Richard Bangue(?)of Watertown In 1657(MCRD 2118), Charles Balam(?)being a witness.

Nothing has appeared about the on gins of Richard Gardner, either. However, an interested court case is summarized in Thompson?s Sex in Middlesex(1986), concerning his daughter Hannah, who later married John Coddington. Your family group sheet should also be amended to show that Anna, born 1655, and Hannah were the same person, not two different children.

This concludes my report; these searches entailed ten hours? research and $20 In photocopy & postage expenses, for a total of $320.00. Please advise as to your wishes for any further research; it has been a pleasure to continue tracing your New England ancestry, and I shall look forward to corresponding again in the future.

Sincerely,

R. Andrew Pierce
